Counseling in the Postpartum Period

The goal of our postpartum counseling program is to address a woman’s special needs as she makes the transition from pregnancy and birth to motherhood.

Our postpartum counseling program addresses the concerns a woman may have in her emotional adjustment to parenting. These may include feelings of depression or anxiety. Thirty-five to eighty percent of women experience some form of postpartum blues. The reasons for this are physical as well as emotional. The intense emotions of labor and birth may also contribute to postpartum blues. In addition to elation and joy at the birth of a child, there is possible disappointment in the birth experience that a woman needs to process. Postpartum depression (PPD) is experienced by approximately 20% of new mothers. Counseling is available to address these issues in an individual, supportive environment.

The counseling may also focus on any of the following topics:

  • Adjustment to motherhood
  • Postpartum blues and depression
  • Childbirth trauma
  • Loss and grief
  • Integration of the experience of childbirth
  • Family and marital changes
  • Family relations
  • Developing parenting styles
  • Breastfeeding
  • Painful circumstances of childhood
